Following on from anti-bullying week, Year 5 has been looking at the specific form of racist bullying. The children were able to confidently identify that racism is bullying someone, or a group of people, because of the colour of their skin, their race or their religion. They were also able to explain that even if a derogatory comment or action happens just once, it is still racism. The children considered how racism might be acted out and they were all able to demonstrate empathy and understanding towards the people who experience prejudice or discrimination.

In Year 6, the children have been considering power and the power games people can play which feed into bullying. They have thought about the psychology behind bullying and power games and understand the differences between legitimate power and power used inappropriately. They identified with a quote from Spiderman “with great power comes great responsibility” and recognise if power is used for the wrong reasons, it can damage other people’s wellbeing or even whole societies.
