Day one of our adventure to Robin Hood’s Bay

Sunday 1 December 2024

Today was the start of an unforgettable adventure for 17 excited children (and three equally enthusiastic teachers!) as we set off bright and early from Windlesham on our journey to The Old School House in Robin Hood’s Bay.

The Journey

The minibus buzzed with energy and chatter as we hit the road. Despite the early hour, the children were wide awake, ready for the adventure. A service station stop midway was a highlight for everyone—rows of snacks, drinks, and treats disappeared into backpacks while delighted children debated the merits of healthy snacks versus chocolate bars. Back on the road, the bus transformed into a hub of creativity. Armed with iPads, the children began crafting short stories, each one inspired by the landscape outside the window. As we neared Yorkshire, our storytelling paused to make way for an impromptu sing-along session, complete with classics and a few made-up songs that had everyone giggling.

The sight of the Yorkshire Moors was breathtaking. The rolling hills, dramatic skies, and occasional glimpses of sheep sparked exclamations of wonder from the back seats. By late afternoon, we arrived in Robin Hood’s Bay, greeted warmly by Dave, who would be our guide during our stay. With him leading the way, we walked down the cobbled streets, wheeling bags toward The Old School House, which felt like stepping into another world.

The Old School House

Nestled at the edge of the village, The Old School House is a charming, welcoming building, full of character and history. Its stone walls and red roof made it feel like a cozy retreat, with warm light glowing from the windows. Inside, the atmosphere was both homely and inspiring, with old wooden beams, creaky floors, and shelves brimming with books—a perfect setting for our literary-themed trip.

Evening adventures

After settling into rooms—some sharing bunk beds, others in twin setups—the children eagerly explored the space before gathering for a delicious supper. It was a hearty meal, with plenty of chatter and laughter as they swapped snacks and shared their iPad stories from the journey.

The day ended with a lively literature quiz, full of fun facts and spirited debates, before everyone was finally ready to crawl into bed. Exhausted from the journey, but thrilled by the start of our adventure, it wasn’t long before the hum of excited whispers faded, replaced by the soft breathing of 17 tired travellers.

Tomorrow, the real exploration begins!
