As our incredible trip drew to a close, we spent a magical final morning at Whitby Abbey and its fascinating Visitor Centre. The experience tied together everything we’ve learned about Gothic fiction, creativity, and history, leaving us with unforgettable memories and plenty of inspiration for future writing.

Morning: Exploring the Abbey and writing among history

Our visit began at the Abbey Visitor Centre where the children found themselves nestled amongst extraordinary exhibits showcasing Whitby’s rich history. Surrounded by displays of ancient artifacts and illuminated manuscripts, they eagerly filled their notebooks and iPads with ideas. Many tried their hands at crafting sonnets, their words beautifully reflecting the awe inspired by the Abbey’s grandeur. One child wrote of “spires that pierce the misty skies,” while another captured the haunting beauty of “stones that whisper tales of old.”

The highlight of the morning was exploring the Abbey ruins themselves. Walking among the towering arches and weathered stone, the children couldn’t help but imagine the stories these walls might tell. Our discussions about Gothic fiction came to life in vivid detail, from the dramatic setting of the Abbey to the sense of mystery and timelessness it evokes. Several children remarked how much they had learned on this trip, with one saying, “It feels like we’ve stepped into a real Gothic novel.”

Journey home: Creativity on the move

As we made our way back to Washington, the bus was alive with chatter, laughter, and a hum of creativity. Many children continued writing, inspired by the day’s visit and the trip as a whole. Others shared favourite memories, from the ghost walk to the treasure hunt, already planning how they’d bring these experiences into their schoolwork and beyond.

It has been a truly remarkable few days filled with learning, creativity, and adventure. Thank you for entrusting us with this experience—it is one we’ll all cherish!
