Our pupils had the privilege of visiting ‘Chalk’ on the Wiston Estate, over the road from Windlesham House. The visit was an educational and delightful experience that revolved around understanding the grapes grown on the estate, the factors contributing to their growth and the intricate process behind the success of their sparkling wine production.
The visit began with an enlightening session on the different grape varieties cultivated on the estate. The pupils learned about the unique characteristics of each grape and how they contribute to the distinct flavours of their sparkling wines. This knowledge gave them a deeper appreciation for the art and science of winemaking.
A highlight of the visit was learning about the grape processing journey, delving into the fascinating details of grape harvesting, stamping, and squashing, discovering how these steps play a pivotal role in creating the fine sparkling wine. Mr Goring, a wonderful guide, deserves special mention. He was not only knowledgeable but also considerate in imparting his expertise. His passion for winemaking and ability to convey complex information in an engaging manner left a lasting impression on all of us.
The visit concluded with a VIP experience witnessing the behind-the-scenes action of sparkling wine production.
